A fresh variant of COVID-19, called “FLiRT,” has stirred worries globally. FLiRT comprises two variants, KP.1 and KP.2, originally found in the United States through wastewater analysis. These variants have emerged from the Omicron family, which caused a surge in COVID-19 cases last winter.
FLiRT is currently causing a rise in COVID-19 cases in Singapore, and India recently reported 324 cases. Fortunately, no significant increase in severe cases or hospitalizations related to the variant has been observed in India.
FLiRT shares common symptoms with other COVID-19 strains, including fever, cough, fatigue, and loss of taste or smell. However, it also presents some unusual symptoms such as mental confusion, continuous hiccups, and red or purple discoloration and swelling of the toes, known as “COVID toes.”
While FLiRT seems to spread faster than previous variants, current COVID-19 vaccines remain effective against it. However, breakthrough infections are still possible.
In response to the emergence of FLiRT, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that countries base their future COVID-19 vaccination formulations on this new variant. WHO also advises people to stay updated with COVID-19 vaccinations, akin to regular annual flu shots, to safeguard against emerging variants.
