NeoCoV Virus – Another Coronavirus Causing a Stir. More Transmissible? More Lethal? Let's Talk.

NeoCoV Virus – Another Coronavirus Causing a Stir. More Transmissible? More Lethal? Let's Talk.

Researchers discovered something new that has spread across news outlets. NeoCoV, a coronavirus that infects bats in South Africa, uses the same receptor to infect bats as SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus causing COVID-19, uses to infect humans. Why does this matter?

Researchers found that NeoCoV is a close cousin to MERS-CoV (the virus that causes Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome). MERS-CoV is a lethal coronavirus that has been linked with upwards of a 35% mortality rate. It isn’t nearly as transmissible or contagious as SARS-CoV-2 though. This is because MERS uses a different receptor to invade cells, called the DPP4 Receptor.

Researchers found that this bat coronavirus, NeoCoV, uses the same receptor as SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, called the ACE2R despite NeoCoV being closely related to MERS-CoV. People have used this to claim that NeoCoV could be as contagious as SARS-CoV-2 and then as lethal as MERS-CoV. The researchers also found that NeoCoV is one mutation away from being able to use the human ACE2R, rather than the Bat ACE2R. They also reported that vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 and MERS sera did not protect against NeoCoV.

We dive into this study and de-mystify many of the reports and claims!
