Fresh COVID-19 waves hit New South Wales and Victoria

A new Omicron sub-variant of COVID-19 is causing new waves of infection across New South Wales and Victoria.

The Victorian Department of Health has reported a rise in community transmission and hospital admissions linked to a new variant named JN.1.

An average of 377 people were taken to hospital with COVID-19 across the state last week.

NSW Health also says there were “high levels” of COVID activity as 2023 came to an end.

The rise in COVID cases has prompted ATAGI to recommend vulnerable people and anyone over the age of 75 to get a booster shot if they haven’t received the vaccine in the last six months.
