Deadly Cat Coronavirus Kills 300,000 Animals: Is the UK at Risk?

Experts say a feline coronavirus could turn Cyprus into an “island of dead cats” after 300,000 died in a recent outbreak. The virus doesn’t appear to discriminate between domestic and stray cats.

Is there a risk of the cat coronavirus spreading to the UK?

Dr. Pankhania explains that infectious diseases do not confine themselves to borders. While Cyprus could implement quarantine control measures to restrict the movement of animals, including cats, there is no confirmation that such measures have been taken.

However, other countries can also implement restrictions on animals coming from areas with outbreaks, as seen in the control measures for rabies.

Speaking of rabies, which used to be a major concern, Dr. Pankhania emphasizes the importance of preventative measures such as vaccinations and avoiding contact with animals abroad. Rabies can be a serious infection that leads to death, and early intervention is crucial.

While there are controls and procedures in place to handle potential exposure to rabies, the virus can be fatal once it takes hold.
